Gaming and Animation alumna Kirkner returns to OC as professor

Kirkner strives to build an inclusive and diverse community.

September 6, 2019 - Ellie Kirkner recently rejoined the Oklahoma Christian University family as an instructor of gaming and animation. She graduated from OC in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Gaming and Animation. Since 2013, Kirkner has worn many different hats. She worked as a freelance illustrator, game concept artist and art director before coming back to be an educator at OC.

Kirkner and her husband, Calahan, love OC and like to hit up the “Dub” exercise facility for a workout or walk around the Eagle Trail after a day of work. Kirkner is involved in local art and game design communities in her free time. She also serves as the art director for Absurdist Productions, a local board game company.

September 6, 2019 - During her summer classes, Kirkner was blown away by what her students were accomplishing in such a short time. Kirkner is ready to continue to be inspired by her students. She hopes to bring a well-rounded perspective to outsiders of the game development community and help advocate for the good that games can bring into the world.

Kirkner feels blessed to rejoin the OC community as well as the Oklahoma City area and all that it has to offer.

“The genuine community, mentorship and support is something wholly unique to Oklahoma City and OC,” said Kirkner. “I love how good people are to each other here.”

Kirkner is overjoyed to have the opportunity to be a supporter and mentor to OC students. She knows what it feels like to be fighting for a place in the gaming world and told that she did not belong. This is something she never wants her students to feel.

“I believe we are all fearfully and wonderfully made with diversity,” said Kirkner. “And I want us to continue to build a department that takes you as you are.”
