OC Art and Design student artwork accepted into competitive art magazine

Students Tavian Johnson, Jacey McDaniels and Lauren Myers had their work accepted in the categories of photography and graphic design.

January 10, 2020 - Oklahoma Christian University Art and Design majors Tavian Johnson, Jacey McDaniels and Lauren Myers recently had their artwork accepted into Creative Quarterly, a competitive magazine for artists and designers to submit their best work to be published.

Creative Quarterly accepts artwork from professionals and students within five categories: fine art, illustration, graphic design, advertising and photography. Johnson and Myers were both runners up for photography, while McDaniels was a runner up for graphic design.

Johnson is a junior majoring in Art and Design. He was one of only six college students to submit his work to the photography category, which was selected as a runner-up by the magazine.

While walking through downtown Oklahoma City, Johnson came across two men in a car who asked for their picture to be taken. Johnson snapped one photo, and the men refused any additional photographs. Later, when picking out which photograph to submit to Creative Quarterly, Michael O’Keefe, OC’s professor of art and design, suggested that Johnson submit that photo.

Johnson finds his inspiration from people.

“It’s easier to capture a certain expression or mood with somebody in it,” Johnson said.

Senior Art and Design major Jacey McDaniels was one of 14 students to get her piece, “Schizophrenia,” accepted as a runner-up in the graphic design category. Her piece expresses the misconceptions that society has on schizophrenia.

“Schizophrenia is a word that strikes fear in the uninformed observer,” McDaniels said. “[The poster] expresses how the humanity of a schizophrenic is often masked through the projection of fear.”

Lauren Myers was one of six runner-ups for photography in Creative Quarterly. She is a senior in Art and Design.

These Art and Design students' artwork will be available soon on Creative Quarterly’s website. Learn more online about OC’s Department of Art and Design programs in Fine Art and in Graphic Design.
