Oklahoma Christian University journalism alumnus Bobby Ross has established a national reputation as a reporter on topics of faith, so it was no surprise he was asked to speak on the recent Light, Truth and Fake News panel hosted online by Abilene Christian University. Speaking on the panel was just the latest honor for this 1990 OC graduate. He is the editor-in-chief of The Christian Chronicle, which is an international newspaper with 135,000 U.S. print subscribers. Since he joined the Chronicle in 2005, he has reported from 50 states and 15 countries. Ross also writes a weekly column about news coverage of faith topics for the online magazine Religion Unplugged

At the Light, Truth and Fake News panel, Ross discussed how church leaders can promote news literacy and a healthy understanding of what can be true or false in the news and social media. The important topics are highly relevant following a contentious presidential election just last year. The panel can be watched online at YouTube here

Though unrelated to Ross’ invitation to speak on the panel, his OC adviser also recently received positive recognition. Distinguished Professor of Communication Phillip Patterson is the co-author of a leading media ethics textbook. His book was recently praised by a local journalist and journalism professor at the University of Central Oklahoma in this Journal Record article.

OC President John deSteiguer noticed Hight’s column and mention of Patterson. deSteiguer added his own words of praise.

“I’m thrilled that students just up the road (and all across the globe!) are impacted by the kingdom ethics of our own Dr. Philip Patterson,” he said. “OC is home to great faculty who publish great resources!”
