Oklahoma Christian University music students perform at the state Music Educators Conference Jan. 16

OC’s Chamber Choir to perform at OkMEA in Tulsa at 8:30 p.m.

January 13, 2020 - Oklahoma Christian University’s music programs are in full swing, with two performances already underway for the Spring 2020 semester. Having performed at the Jazz Education Network Festival, OC’s music department now prepares to take on the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.

Early in the semester, some members of OC’s jazz band performed at JEN in New Orleans, Louisiana. Their Jan. 10 performance included students Michael Potts, Spencer Banister, Sam Vaughn, Aaron Parrot, Stephen Gaub and Garret Minor.

On Jan. 16, OC’s Chamber Choir will perform for the OkMEA as an honor choir. After submitting music from last year, OC was chosen to perform not only at the conference but also the concert held next week at Oklahoma State University.

Elizabeth Killough, president of the OC choir, is proud and excited to perform as well as return, since OC was asked to participate in the OkMEA concert in 2017, her freshman year.

“My experience at OkMEA my freshman year is something I will always hold dear to my heart,” Killough said. “It is so cool to get to begin and end my college career with an honor like this. I’m excited to share this concert with this special group of people for a second time.”

Freshman Machella Brown described her excitement regarding her transition from a high school choir to a college choir, as well as her hopes for the future.

“It’s fun to perform because you’re telling a story to people,” Brown said. “I’m excited to hopefully inspire people.”

The concert will be at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at 8:30 p.m. on Jan.16. Tickets are on sale for $5, and OC students and alumni are strongly encouraged to attend in support. To learn more about OC’s Department of Music, visit www.oc.edu/academics/undergraduate-programs/music.
