Spring Sing is a longtime tradition that is praised around the Oklahoma Christian University community. This year, the show’s theme was “True Colors.” While the social service clubs performed, the band and hosts also contributed to the show. This year’s hosts were Samatha King, Destiny Bentley, Kelan Owen, Cayden Abrams, Ansel Jeffries and Walker LaRue.

The band was also an essential aspect of Spring Sing. This year, the band was managed by music education major Spencer Banister, who also played the piano. The other band members included music majors Nate Anthenat, Cameron Cox, Stephen Gaub, Garret Minor and Sam Vaughn, plus business major Jesse Garner.

In addition, three Communication Program students had important behind-the-scenes roles. Olivia Bryant served as the executive director, and Denton David and Blake Mayfield worked on the tech crew.

King, Bentley, Owen and Abrams all hold majors within Humanities and Bible. King is a junior vocal music education major, Bentley is a senior public communication and leadership major, Owen is a sophomore vocal music education major and Abrams is a freshman elementary education major.

These students manage a lot between their studies and rehearsal. Owen noted the challenges during a performance in the time of COVID-19.

“The most difficult part about being a host right now is trying to show expression while wearing the masks,” Owen said. “Being a host has been a blast, but it’s had its challenges. Despite the challenges, I’m excited for the audience; they make it all worth it.”

Last year, Spring Sing was the last thing that the OC community got to do all together before the pandemic took over. Banister expressed what this year’s show means to OC.

“Last year, Spring Sing was one of the last ‘normal’ things we got to do before the world turned upside down,” Banister said. “This year, it’s one of the first big things we get to do as we look ahead to life post-pandemic. This is going to be a special and memorable show, and I’m excited to see the joy it brings the OC community.”

Show week kicked off with a performance on April 8 for Faculty Night at 8:30 p.m, followed by two regular performances on April 9 and 10 at 8:30 p.m.
