OC symphonic band to perform an outdoor concert Oct. 18

The concert will be held at the Lawson Commons at 2 p.m.

October 13, 2020

Due to COVID-19, Oklahoma Christian University’s symphonic band has not performed since “Cocoa and Carols” held in December of 2019. With a great forecast for fall weather, the campus community can once again hear the symphonic band perform in the Lawson Commons at 2 p.m. Oct. 18.

The musicians will perform five songs that are major works in the concert band repertoire. The band will open with a fun fanfare, “Carnegie Anthem” by William Owens. The song will be followed by “The Inferno,” a piece based on Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” The very serious and emotional “Lux Aurumque” (Lightning Gold) by Eric Whitacre will follow. The song is originally a choral work that Whitacre wrote and transcribed for a wind ensemble. Next, “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” will be performed, featuring a flute soloist. This piece is an arrangement based on an Irish hymn by the same title. Lastly, the concert will end with “The Hounds of Spring” by Alfred Reed.

Assistant Professor of Music Scott Filleman will direct the band and looks forward to the concert being played outside.

“As far as wind band literature, the whole concert is pretty stout,” said Filleman. “For those who enjoy concert band music, it will be a pretty neat show.”

Noah Bagley, a flute and winds instrumentalist, looks forward to the concert.

“It’s one of the biggest concerts we’ve ever done,” he said. “The band has come a long way. It’s been great to be a part of the growth. I’m excited for it.”

The concert will be live streamed through the OC live stream page, https://www.oc.edu/live and through OC’s Friends of Music Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ocfriendsofmusic
