Oklahoma Christian University’s expansive art and design program offers students instruction in a variety of artistic media, and those students get to display their best work each year in OC’s art gallery. Soon to be under the leadership of a new art gallery director, the 2020-2021 gallery opened Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. with a reception in the Garvey Center.

Since opening in 1999, OC’s art gallery has hosted more than 100 shows. The upcoming opening will be the gallery’s 105th show. Amy Beauchamp, the program chair of art and design, provided some insight as to what will be on display.

“The first show of every year is generally the student show,” Beauchamp said. “We showcase the work that the students have produced the previous year. In this particular exhibition, they will have work from the classes Elements of Visual Thinking, Photography, Interior Architecture and possibly Graphic Design.”

Through displaying their art within the gallery, students’ work is exposed to more people who come to visit the gallery. The students are not only able to display the quality of their work, but also the quality of the program itself.

“The gallery gives the student body, the faculty and staff the opportunity to see our students’ best work,” Beauchamp said. “The professors and staff who have them for history, science, and other general education classes are able to see the type of work that they do outside of those classes. I think this helps OC connect with our students a little bit differently.”

Along with the first show of the semester, the art gallery will also soon have a new director. That person will be announced soon.

“We’re looking forward to working with the new gallery director,” Beauchamp said. “He brings a lot of great experience to the position. ”

The senior show will run through Oct. 8, with the gallery open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
