Earlier this year, Oklahoma Christian University Professor of Communication David Lowry released his online textbook “Peacemaking 101,” which discusses insightful principles and practices in promoting peacemaking. Building on that accomplishment, Lowry has now released a 12-part video series discussing the principles of his book. The video series was created to both help anyone interested in peacemaking and as a supplement for professors and students using the textbook.
When asked for the inspiration behind creating the videos, Lowry discussed his involvement in teaching peaceful principles and his desire to provide easy access to the materials.
“For five years, I have taught lectures on peacemaking,” Lowry said. “Due to the COVID-19 crisis, I was asked to create bite-sized videos alongside a PowerPoint presentation to be used by OC instructors David Jurney and Wes McKenzie. I feel very strongly about peacemaking, and I wanted anyone who is interested to have the material.”
The videos are over the 12 principles covered in Lowry’s book, providing a more accessible medium that can be used in supplemental learning or alongside the book. By using these materials together, students are able to focus more in depth on the principles, and professors can more easily choose the principles they would like to spend more time teaching.
In the long term, Lowry hopes to create a more concrete class on peacemaking, with the possibility of OC offering peacemaking as a minor.
“My goal is to create a small certificate program at OC for ministers and people who wish to be able to tell their churches or their businesses, ‘I’m certified by Oklahoma Christian as a mediator with an introduction to peacemaking,’” Lowry said.
The videos can be accessed online through Lowry’s OneDrive account. Eventually, he hopes to include the material in OC’s Oral Communication course that covers both interpersonal and team communication.
