During basketball season, the Eagle Media team puts in many hours behind the scenes to bring a live broadcast of Oklahoma Christian University’s basketball games to the COX Communication channel. Throughout the games, students provide a full-coverage broadcast, complete with live commentators, to all Eagle fans.
The broadcast producer, the commentators and the camera operators can all be found working in the gym. Back in the studio, the director, sound people, graphic operators and replay operators are there to make sure everything runs smoothly. Communication between OC’s Crehan Video Center and the Payne Athletic Center is crucial to the success of the broadcast. Throughout the game, the technical director is the central contact point for the COX channel.
Eagle Media’s Technical Director, Blake Mayfield, shared how much the team benefits from the broadcasts.
“It’s a great program that gives us a lot of opportunities to learn,” Mayfield said. “Even though not all of us are interested in broadcasting, it still puts us in a high-pressure situation that sets us up for any future job in creative media.”
Basketball is the only sport that Eagle Media broadcasts live, but they often film at soccer, softball and baseball games to get coverage for Eagle Angle, the weekly student-operated television news program.
Raegan Meyer, the sports broadcast producer, spoke on the importance of working as a team throughout each broadcast.
“We all work really well together,” she said. “A lot of times, people come into college feeling alone in their major and just trying to get their degree, but Eagle Media has shown me that you can’t survive in my major without working as a team.”
Of course, working with a strict deadline can come with its challenges, but Meyer is always confident that the production will come together in the end. Eagle Media has taught her a lot about what her future will look like in creative media.
“We can’t just freak out when technical difficulties come up,” Meyer said. “That’s why this role has taught me so much about critical thinking and how to adapt, which is important in my major. Sometimes things will go wrong, but it’s up to us what happens next.”
Due to COVID-19, the teams only have a set number of people who can attend the games. So, broadcasts are more helpful now than ever.
