Oklahoma Christian University’s Homecoming musical drew in students from all colleges in 2019
November 5, 2019 - When members of the OC community think about the Homecoming musical, most people imagine the show is produced by students in the Department of Communication. However, the show would simply not be possible without drawing from many other areas of the campus. In fact, students from each of OC’s four main colleges represented the diverse cast of the 2019 OC Homecoming musical, “The Little Mermaid.” OC Professor of music and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts John Fletcher counted at least 20 non-music majors, 12 of which are outside of the College of Liberal Arts.
Chief Academic Officer Scott Lamascus explained his gratitude for the OC performing arts program.
“I cannot imagine a complete, viable, quintessential, compelling or engaging university without cultural programs like these,” he said. “And I love that many students get performing arts as a nonmajor approach to continued growth that enhances their personal maturation and professional readiness in engineering, health sciences, biblical studies and on and on. I have heard so many alumni say that their participation in co-curricular and extracurricular performing arts was a key part of their transformation here.”
Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Tina Winn reflected on the success of the musical and looks forward to the future of the performing arts at OC.
“The OC Department of Music provides a rich cultural experience for our campus and the wider Oklahoma City community,” she said. “And, it supports many other programs on campus through scholarships for students in their majors. “The Magic Flute,” Cocoa and Carols and Cabaret are just a few of the many performances we will enjoy this fall and next spring.”
