The recent passing of Oklahoma Christian University’s Distinguished Professor of History John Maple brought sadness to many, but it also helped those who were influenced by him to celebrate his legacy. OC President John deSteiguer highlighted Maple’s impact in a recent, touching email to the campus community.

“Dr. Maple was a lot of things - all admirable,” deSteiguer said. “He was a first-rate teacher. He had great expectations for his students. He guided many of them into life-long careers in law, politics, and history. Year in and year out, his History Honor Society performed at the highest level - and was recognized for such on the national stage. He was a good colleague who cared about his peers. And, he loved his family deeply.

“But, what was the most profound for me - a conversation I had in my office with him several years ago. John told me that when he was first diagnosed with his terrible disease, it took him to a decision point - was his faith real and life-changing or was it convenient and not really his. In other words, spiritually, was he going to go all in and believe in Jesus, or was his faith going to be compromised because of this difficult physical path he was on. He told me that it didn't take him long to know where he firmly stood. Jesus was his saviour, and he was totally convinced of that.

“That was such an encouragement to me. Dr. Maple's faith in Jesus strengthens my faith in Jesus. His example - stopping and thinking and reminding oneself of what he believes in and why - is something we all need to do. And, me first. Please pray for Connie and the family. And, thank God for Christians and friends like John Maple.”

Maple gave his last lecture at OC in January of last year. The full lecture is available online here.
