OC’s Department of Communication hosts Mick Cornett’s television show “The Verdict” in 2020

The weekly talk show will allow students valuable, hands-on experience filming a news program with the former mayor of Oklahoma City.

February 3, 2020 - For 14 years, Mick Cornett led Oklahoma City as mayor and helped transform the metro as citizens revitalized downtown and helped land the successful Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. Now, Cornett will work from Oklahoma Christian University’s Crehan Studio for the set of his television show “The Verdict” starting Feb. 6. Co-hosted with Kent Meyers, co-founder of the nonprofit Oklahoma Lawyers for Children, the show discusses legal and social issues of general interest to viewers in Oklahoma.

Dave Jurney, OC communication instructor and advisor for Eagle Media, is excited about having a cable news production on campus.

“Having ‘The Verdict’ filmed in our on-campus facilities is good for Oklahoma Christian and for our students because it gives them an opportunity to work with professionals producing a known television show, to give them a chance to gain experience and build their resume at the same time,” he said. “It helps our department by bringing in a little bit of revenue that we can use to continue to upgrade our facilities and keep them state-of-the-art.”

Creative media student Blake Mayfield was involved in showcasing the studio and showing Cornett and his crew how the facilities operate. Mayfield will be a paid assistant on set during taping. He has built up considerable experience on campus through Eagle Media’s weekly news program “Eagle Angle.”

“[Working with Cornett’s team] is an excellent opportunity to watch [a show] come together,” Mayfield said. “This a unique experience to observe and network with people in the broadcast industry.”

The first episode filmed at OC will feature a special guest in OC President John deSteiguer. That episode will first air Feb. 9. “The Verdict” can be seen on Cox Communications YurView Channel 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa on Sunday at 9 a.m., Monday at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Wednesday at 10 a.m. Episodes will also be posted online at YurView’s YouTube page.
