OC student Lynker Mugire was chosen for the FINN Partners and PRSSA Diversity mentorship program
FINN Partners is one of the fastest-growing global, independent marketing and communications agencies in the world, and one impressive Oklahoma Christian University student was just chosen for the company’s diversity mentorship program. A partnership with the Public Relations Student Society of America, FINN’s Partners for Diversity: A PR & Marketing Career Preview program invited applications from students of traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. The selected students worked with a FINN mentor the last week of March to learn more about working in a global communications agency and the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in public relations.
Lynker Mugire, an OC student from Rwanda studying in Public Relations and Social Media, was one of about 75 PRSSA member students chosen nationwide. The program strives to provide underrepresented students opportunities in an increasingly competitive industry and job market. Another benefit of the program for students like Mugire is that after completion, she can apply for a FINN internship.
Mugire was also invited to virtually attend internal client meetings and challenged to brainstorm and generate pitches, tactics and a targeted media list. She also learned about building a resume and strong interview tactics directly from FINN recruiters.
“I applied for this program to be able to learn more about PR in real life and have hands-on experience to be used in Rwanda after my graduation,” Mugire said. “I have learned more about working with clients and doing what they want by either writing a press release or media pitches.”
Mugire was encouraged to apply by her advisor, Associate Professor of Communication Josh Watson, who also serves as the adviser for OC’s PRSSA chapter.
“Lynker is such an intelligent and diligent student, and I knew she would be a great choice for this program,” he said. “I love that our chapter and our Eagle PR student-run agency, which Lynker works in, provides students opportunities often only available at larger universities. Lynker is well on her way to make a truly global impact in her career.”
In addition to this mentorship selection, OC’s PRSSA students also just learned their spring Bateman competition campaign was chosen for an Honorable Mention award as one of the top-15 campaigns in the nation.
