Oklahoma Christian University’s choirs, including the Chamber Singers, the Chorale and the Women’s Choir, will perform on Oct. 10. Located in the McIntosh Conservatory in the Garvey Center, the free concert begins at 2 p.m.

The students have practiced since the beginning of the year, putting in three to six hours of work each week. Some of the pieces that they will perform are Eric Whitacre's "Water Night," Elaine Hagenberg's "Alleluia," Ola Gjeilo's "Nisi Dominus" and Jake Runestad's "Let My Love Be Heard."

The students are led by Choir Director and Professor of Music Kyle Pullen. Pullen noted the importance of concerts such as these to the student’s music education.

“Concerts introduce students to current works,” he said. “They teach students about some of the pieces that represent the musical periods, and they give students the opportunity to teach and conduct a choir.”

Samantha King, president of the choir and the director of OC’s women’s choir, is confident in the group’s ability and is thrilled about the upcoming concert.

“Trying to balance rehearsal with other classes and social life at OC can be challenging,” she said. “But, my classmates and I have worked so hard, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. I can’t wait to showcase our efforts to the OC community.”

Senior music education major Kenzie Murphy noted that concerts are so much more to her than just an annual event.

“Choir is one of my favorite parts of the day,” she said. “I love getting to take a break from all the stress of college and make music with my peers. Dr. Pullen is incredible and so knowledgeable; I’m always learning new things to make me better as a musician and to prepare me as a future teacher.”
