OC’s Music Program will perform “Willy Wonka” for 2021 Homecoming Nov. 4-6

Students and faculty are preparing for the Nov. 4-6 performance in Baugh Auditorium.

A classic children’s tale by Roald Dahl, celebrated with two movie adaptations, comes to the stage at Oklahoma Christian University Nov. 4-6. This year’s homecoming musical is “Willy Wonka,” directed by Barbara Berard. The performances begin each at 7:30 p.m. in Baugh Auditorium.

During homecoming, OC welcomes alumni back to campus and allows students to be involved in the festivities. The theme of the 2021 homecoming is “I Dreamed a Dream.”

Director of Choral Activities and the musical’s producer, Kyle Pullen, feels confident in the cast’s ability to perform an impressive show.

“The cast for the show is very strong,” he said. “Our director has been very creative with this show to make it fun, yet different from the movie versions. The choreography and the scenery will be amazing.”

The cast of 25 is led by junior Music major Kelan Owen from Edmond, Oklahoma, who plays Willy Wonka. Local 12 year-old Dylan Howard, a sixth-grader at Oakdale Elementary School, plays Charlie.

The musical is based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “Willy Wonka” was written by Tim McDonald and Leslie Bricusse with music composed by Bricusse and Anthony Newley. The story follows honest child Charlie Buckets as he tours Willy Wonka’s wondrous and mysterious chocolate factory. Wonka has offered a golden ticket to the rightful recipient of his chocolate factory and fortunes.

Like other homecoming festivities, the musical is open to the public. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased or reserved online at oc.edu/events. The Thursday night performance is free to employees and students with an OC I.D. card. Alumni may contact the OC Alumni Office for a discount code.
