OC’s Jazz Band Concert will be April 7 and feature the steel drum ensemble
The concert will feature jazz classics and the steel drum ensemble playing Jimmy Buffet songs.
Snow and ice delayed but did not stop live jazz music at Oklahoma Christian University this semester. The OC Jazz Band will host a performance April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Judd Theater on OC’s campus. Professor of Music Heath Jones and his students are looking forward to performing after two previous cancellations.
The students will perform jazz classics “May’s Way,” “Vehicle,” “But not for Me” and “Barnburner.” The Steel Drum ensemble will perform beloved Jimmy Buffet songs.
Jones is thrilled to showcase his talented students. The richness of the music creates an energetic environment that brings people together. Similarly, band member Samuel Vaughn expressed how jazz has a way of lifting peoples’ spirits.
“Jazz Band is a fantastic place for people of any background or identity to come together and
make beautiful music, and I've developed some amazing friendships with this group that
I'm immensely grateful,” he said. “I love playing, listening to and studying this music so much since it is about leaving one's individual comfort zone and finding a unique voice to express oneself. Plus, it's a really fun time. It's a laid back and joyous environment, especially with Dr. Jones at the helm. Everyone feels relaxed, while at the same time striving toward greatness.”
OC’s Music program is filled with staff and students who are passionate about what they do. Jazz Band is just one of the many experiences for students in this program. Jones is delighted for his students to deliver a beautiful performance and invites the OC community to experience the night.
