OC’s Jazz and Steel Drum band hosts jazz vocalist Chanda Graham for a free concert Feb. 16

One benefit students enjoy from Oklahoma Christian University’s Music Program is access to professional musicians in the Oklahoma City area. OC’s next free jazz concert will feature one such professional as well as the talents of students and faculty.

Professional jazz vocalist Chanda Grahan will perform with OC’s Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble and Steel Drum Ensemble Feb. 16 in Judd Theater at 7:30 p.m. 

The Jazz Ensemble is made of a group of 19 students who are led by Professor of Music John Fletcher. In this concert, they will perform a variety of styles with the group such as Latin (“Caravan”), rock (“Them Changes”), historical big band (Count Basie’s “Li’l Darlin” and other vocal features. Several students will perform solos within the group. 

Oklahoma City native Graham is an attorney, former judge and professional vocalist known for her range of vocal skills and styles. She has recently made a transition from the courtroom to the stage. Jones and the students have enjoyed pushing themselves to perform at an even higher level to match her exceptional talent. 

“She is an Oklahoma City diamond that could sing professionally anywhere in the world,” OC Professor of Music Heath Jones said. “We are blessed to have her as a guest artist in the Jazz Ensemble.” 

Graham will be featured on two pieces, (the blues tune “Every Day I Have the Blues” and the ballad “When I Fall In Love”). As she is known to be a powerhouse vocalist who regularly performs in jazz and blues club venues, the Music students are excited to perform with Graham at OC. 

Seating is first-come, first-served. Judd Theater is located in OC’s Garvey Center near the Baugh Auditorium.
