OC Music welcomes the community to its free Symphonic Band and Chamber Orchestra concert March 5

It has been a tradition for the Oklahoma Christian University Music Program to share their musical talents with the campus. OC’s Symphonic Band and Chamber Orchestra will perform on campus on March 5 at 3 p.m. in Judd Theatre. This will be a free event for all OC students and the community to enjoy.

Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands George Scrander and Adjunct Instructor Gena Alexander will direct the performances. Alexander is also a Music alumna and a local music teacher.

A unique aspect of this OC Music concert is the combination of musical styles. Symphonic bands are larger ensembles that include multiple musicians using woodwind, percussion and brass instruments. A chamber orchestra is a smaller group, usually with one musician for each instrument the last but not the least there will be Symphonic Orchestra.

According to Scharder, the theme of the concert is the Latin word lux, which means “light” in English. The students will perform songs by composers such as Eric Whitacre, David Maslanka, Alex Shapiro, Yasuhide Ito, Paul Hart, Aaron Copland and more.

The concert is free to the public, and seating is first-come, first-serve.
