OC journalism alumnus Steve Lackmeyer selected as a 2022 Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame Honoree

Steve Lackmeyer is an Oklahoma Christian University Journalism alumnus who is a well-known author, reporter and columnist for The Oklahoman. In honor of his many accomplishments in his career, in which he has been recognized as one of the most-respected reporters in Oklahoma City, Lackmeyer was selected as an honoree into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame this year.

He began his career at The Oklahoman in 1990, winning numerous awards for his work, including covering the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City’s Metropolitan Area Projects, the rebirth of the city’s urban core and the courting of the NBA. Lackmeyer has written seven books about Oklahoma City’s history and is a frequent speaker on downtown development and history. To no surprise, his work has appeared in newspapers nationwide, and he has been interviewed by the BBC, the New York Times and other publications. Lackmeyer also volunteers with a task force that is creating a monument in honor of Oklahoma City’s original civil rights sit-in movement. On top of that, he also serves as Board President at Retro Metro OKC. Previously, the OC Communication Program had honored him with its Alumni of the Year Award.

The 2022 honorees include Lackmeyer and 10 others, who will become members of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame. The hall now has 478 journalists and seven Lifetime Achievement honorees. Lackmeyer and the other honorees for 2022 will be honored at an Induction Ceremony and Gala April 28. Joining him at the event will be his college advisor, OC’s own Distinguished Professor of Communication Philip Patterson.

The Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame was founded in 1971 by former University of Central Oklahoma Journalism Chairman Ray Tassin and Dennie Hall, with both serving as directors. All members are featured on the hall of fame website. Past honoree plaques are on display at the hall of fame on the third floor of UCO’s Nigh University Center. OC is proud of Lackmeyer and his many, many accomplishments.
