OC hosts high school students for Future Teacher’s Day

OC’s Education Program encouraged 12 high school students to consider a future in education last month.

Oklahoma Christian University’s Education Program prepares future teachers academically, relationally and spiritually, taking pride in the success of alumni. On Sept. 30, 12 high school students from various school districts learned more about OC’s successful Education Program and a career in education at the third Future Teacher’s Day.

The event allows high school students to imagine their futures, both as a potential OC student and as a future teacher.

Darin Martin, OC’s director of teacher education, noted the importance of Future Teacher’s Day and the lasting impact it has on students.

“The event impacts our visiting high school students by opening their eyes to many opportunities at OC: scholarships, social clubs, lasting relationships, engaging classes, chapel, cultural connections and campus life,” Martin said.

The day’s events included greetings from Charles Rix, dean of the College of Humanities and Bible, and Billie McConnell, chair of OC’s Education Program. The day also included informational sessions from various OC divisions (including a session from Gail Nash, chair of the Division of Language, Literature, and Communication), and a visit to Dudley Chancey’s classroom, an OC professor of youth and family ministry.

Students attended chapel and heard from current Education students. Alumna Allie Fabrie also spoke and discussed the essential nature of sharing Christ’s love with students.

The event this month was OC’s third Future Teacher’s Day, though the previous two were held in the spring. Martin noted why the event was scheduled for the fall semester.

“We chose to have an event in the fall so we could give students a taste of OC and the School of Education before making their college selections in the spring,” he said.

OC is proud of its Education faculty, staff and students, and Future Teacher’s Day introduced OC’s next education students to a program they will be proud to call home.
