OC’s Jazz Band hosts musician Jerry Tachoir for a free concert Oct. 26
The band and professional vibraphonist will perform songs from the famous Stan Kenton Orchestras at 7:30 p.m.
It is not often that Oklahoma Christian University Music students get to perform with a professional musician on campus, but the OC Jazz Band will do just that on Oct. 26. The public is invited to the free concert, which will feature the world-renowned and Grammy-nominated jazz artists Jerry and Marlene Tachoir and jazz drummer James Keys. Keys is the worship drummer for Crossings Community Church and a freelance musician in Oklahoma City. They will join the Jazz Band as they perform songs from the famous Stan Kenton Orchestras.
Jazz Band member Spencer Banister believes OC audiences will enjoy the show.
“The band is sounding great, and we were eager to keep working over the last few weeks,” he said. “We’re playing some great tunes that will appeal to a wide audience.”
Another aspect of the performance that Jazz Band members are looking forward to is performing alongside professional musician and author Tachoir. The Grammy-nominated musician has performed for nearly 30 years and traveled through the U.S, Canada and Europe. Together, Jerry and the OC Jazz band will perform famous songs such as those listed below.
“Groovin’ Hard” - arranged by Don Menza for the Buddy Rich Band
“Blackbird” - the Beatles’ classic arranged by Mike Tomaro
“Once In A Lifetime” - a vocal tune featuring Stephen Gaub
“Time For A Change” - arranged by Hank Levy for the Stan Kenton Orchestra
Additionally, OC’s Steel Drum Ensemble will perform.
The OC Jazz Band and Steel Drum Ensemble are comprised of 17 and nine OC students respectively. The groups are led by Music Professor Heath Jones. At the concert, the musicians will perform a variety of jazz and Caribbean music.
Vaccinated attendees are welcome to attend without masks. Others are encouraged to wear masks and practice healthy distancing.
