Three OC students were selected to perform with the 2022 Oklahoma Intercollegiate Honor Band

Although the concert was canceled, Sam Vaughn, Ashlyn Karguth and Cameron Cox were recognized and applauded for their musical talent Jan. 19-22.

Three OC students were chosen to represent Oklahoma’s top college musicians this month, an honor OC’s Music Program annually receives. The three were selected to perform in the annual Oklahoma Intercollegiate Honor Band at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association’s Winter Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jan. 19-22. Sam Vaughn, a sophomore performing on the clarinet, Ashlyn Karguth, a freshman also performing on the clarinet and Cameron Cox, a senior performing on the trumpet, received an invitation to the convention.

Unfortunately, because of the handful of universities that have had to go into remote learning, these three students will not be able to perform at this year's annual concert due to its cancellation. However, the significant honor of being chosen is still an accomplishment to congratulate them for. In addition, the students traveled with OC Music faculty to recruit high school students who attended the Winter Conference.

Students who receive an invitation to perform in the OMEA honor band are carefully selected with consideration of one’s character, musical skills and leadership. This exclusive band is only comprised of 100 students from across the state.

Cameron, a senior, gave some insight on how he felt about the honor and cancellation of the concert.

It was disappointing to hear about the cancellation of the honor band performance,” he said. “That event is a great opportunity to meet other music majors and play some fantastic music.
